Suetonius: Vol 1

Description

Suetonius (C. Suetonius Tranquillus, born ca. 70 CE), son of a military tribune, was at first an advocate and a teacher of rhetoric, but later became the emperor Hadrian's private secretary, 119121. He dedicated to C. Septicius Clarus, prefect of the praetorian guard, his "Lives of the Caesars." After the dismissal of both men for some breach of court etiquette, Suetonius apparently retired and probably continued his writing. His other works, many known by title, are now lost except for part of the "Lives of Illustrious Men" (of letters). Friend of Pliny the Younger, Suetonius was a studious and careful collector of facts, so that the extant lives of the emperors (including Julius Caesar the dictator) to Domitian are invaluable. His plan in "Lives of the Caesars" is: the emperor's family and early years; public and private life; death. We find many anecdotes, much gossip of the imperial court, and various details of character and personal appearance. Suetonius's account of Nero's death is justly famous. The Loeb Classical Library edition of Suetonius is in two volumes. Both volumes were revised throughout in 1997-98, and a new Introduction added.

Everyday Fashions of the 20's: As Pictured in Sears and Other Catalogs

Description

The Roaring Twenties, age of jazz and flappers, Model T Fords and Hollywood movie stars, was also a time when for millions the bulky catalogs of Montgomery Ward or Sears, Roebuck were a substitute for the window displays of Paris or New York fashion shops. Buying clothing through the mails had become an American institution, and entire families were often dressed via the U.S. Post Office. More conservative than the up-to-the-minute fashion shops, mail-order catalogs nevertheless offered surprisingly much of the haute couture. But, above all, they accurately record what men, women, and children were actually wearing in the 1920s.

Norman Naimark: Stalin's Genocides

Stalin's Genocides

Description

Between the early 1930s and his death in 1953, Joseph Stalin had more than a million of his own citizens executed. Millions more fell victim to forced labor, deportation, famine, bloody massacres, and detention and interrogation by Stalin's henchmen. Stalin's Genocides is the chilling story of these crimes. The book puts forward the important argument that brutal mass killings under Stalin in the 1930s were indeed acts of genocide and that the Soviet dictator himself was behind them. Norman Naimark, one of our most respected authorities on the Soviet era, challenges the widely held notion that Stalin's crimes do not constitute genocide, which the United Nations defines as the premeditated killing of a group of people because of their race, religion, or inherent national qualities. In this gripping book, Naimark explains how Stalin became a pitiless mass killer. He looks at the most consequential and harrowing episodes of Stalin's systematic destruction of his own populace--the liquidation and repression of the so-called kulaks, the Ukrainian famine, the purge of nationalities, and the Great Terror--and examines them in light of other genocides in history. In addition, Naimark compares Stalin's crimes with those of the most notorious genocidal killer of them all, Adolf Hitler.

Steven Fielding: The Executioner's Bible

The Executioner's Bible

Description

"The Executioner's Bible" tells the story of these working-class men who carried out this gruesome profession until its abolition in the late 1960's. Despite often being unassuming and quiet professionals, men like Albert Pierrepoint, William Billington and many other Chief and Assistant executioners made a name for themselves in a world hungry for salacious and gruesome news. Read about the bungling hangmen sacked for incompetence; drunken executioners dismissed for brawling; one hangman driven to suicide and another who 'got out just in time', to the last men to pull the lever at the height of the swinging sixties. They were the last of their kind: the hangmen of the 20th Century. And this is their fascinating sometimes repugnant, always enthralling story. The secrets of over six controversial decades of capital punishment are finally revealed.

What Makes Love Last?: How to Build Trust and Avoid Betrayal

Description

In this insightful book, celebrated research psychologist and couples counselor John Gottman plumbs the mysteries of love and shares the results of his famous Love Lab: Where does love come from? Why does some love last, and why does some fade? And how can we keep it alive? Based on laboratory findings, this book shows readers how to identify signs, behaviors, and attitudes that indicate a fraying relationship and provides strategies for repairing what may seem lost or broken."

Dear Reader, Those of you who are familiar with my books know that Ireland is one of my favorite places to visit, in real life and in fiction. It s a country of dramatic cliffs and quiet fields. What Makes Love Last?: How to Build Trust and Avoid Betrayal pdf One of myth and magic and legend. In Jewels of the Sun, I ve borrowed from some of those myths and created my own legend. It could have happened. I d like you to meet the Gallaghers of Ardmore: Aidan, Shawn, and Darcy, who run the local pub in this pretty seaside village in the county of Waterford. Not far from the village is a cottage, a place of magic where a lonely American woman comes to explore her roots and her heart. She won t be alone in the house, for there is another lonely woman in residence. She just happens to be a ghost. With the help of a faerie prince who loved well if not wise, Aidan Gallagher of Ardmore and Jude Frances Murray from Chicago will find their place, and take the first step toward breaking a hundred-year spell. I d like to take you back to Ireland with me, through the doors of Gallagher s Pub where the fire s burning low and the pints are waiting. I have a story to tell you.Nora Roberts"

Istvan Bori: The Essential Guide to Being Hungarian

The Essential Guide to Being Hungarian

Description

What is it to be Hungarian? What does it feel like? Most Hungarians are convinced that the rest of the world just doesn't get them. They are right. True, much of the world thinks highly of Hungarians--for reasons ranging from their heroism in the 1956 revolution to their genius as mathematicians, physicists, and financiers. But Hungarians do often seem to be living proof of the old joke that Magyars are in fact Martians: they may be situated in the very heart of Europe, but they are equipped with a confounding language, extraterrestrial (albeit endearing) accents, and an unearthly way of thinking. What most Hungarians learn from life about the Magyar mind is now available, for the first time, in this user-friendly guide to what being Hungarian is all about. "The Essential Guide to Being Hungarian" brings together twelve authors well-versed in the quintessential ingredients of being Hungarian--from the stereotypical Magyar man to the stereotypical Magyar woman, foods to folk customs, livestock to literature, film to philosophy, politics to porcelain, and scientists to sports. In fifty short, highly readable, often witty, sometimes politically incorrect, but always candid articles, the authors demonstrate that being credibly Hungarian--like being French, Polish or Japanese--is largely a matter of carrying around in your head a potpourri of conceptions and preconceptions acquired over the years from your elders, society, school, the streets, and mass media. Compacting this wealth of knowledge into an irresistible little book, "The Essential Guide to Being Hungarian "is an indispensable reference that will teach you how to be Hungarian, even if you already are.

But you don't do that. I like how spend so much time in the book reinforcing the fact that we are good human beings at our core and it's a matter of presenting ourselves honestly, without apology to everyone we encounter. Food: The History of Taste

Description

This book is the first to apply the discoveries of the new generation of food historians worldwide to the unashamedly romantic appeal of the subject: to the culinary accomplishments of diverse civilizations, past and present, and to the pleasures of dining. The result is truly a history of taste: our most elevated, elegant and pleasurable thoughts about food - ingredients, preparation, presentation - since prehistory. From beginning to end this is an enthralling and richly illustrated story of one of the most vital clues not just to what keeps us alive, but to what makes us feel alive.

WINNER OF THE 2014 ALEX AWARD Here for the first time in English is a complete Dzogchen meditation manual from the ancient religious tradition of Tibet known as Bon. The "Kunzang Nying-tig" by Shardza Tashi Gyaltsen is a powerful and practical instructional text, which cuts to the heart of Dzogchen meditation. Dzogchen is regarded by Bonpos as the highest and most esoteric religious practice.Written in the style of personal instruction from Shardza to his students, the manual is supplemented with a Collins Gem: Collins Gem Russian Dictionary free ebook commentary by Lopon Tenzin Namdak who is himself an acknowledged master of Dzogchen. The translation was carried out by Lopon in the course of teaching the text to Western students at his monastery in the Kathmandu Valley. The book has four parts: preliminary practices, the practice of trekcho, the practice of togel and bardo, and phowa practices. Also included are a discussion of the rainbow body, a short history of Bon, and biographies of the authors.

1001 Fairy Things to Spot Sticker Book

Description

An interactive sticker book full of busy, illustrated scenes of life in Fairyland. Items to spot within the main picture are shown in the border as silhouettes and each has a corresponding sticker which children can find, match and add in the correct place. With over a thousand things for children to find, count and talk about.

In November 2001, as the world still reeled from the attack on the Twin Towers, German historian Sonke Neitzel discovered an extraordinary cache of documents from the Second World War. The documents were the transcripts of German prisoners of war talking among themselves in prisoner of war camps, and secretly recorded by the allies. In these apparently private conversations the soldiers talked freely and openly about their hopes and fears, their concerns and their day-to-day lives. With a banality and ease which to the modern reader can appear shocking, they also talked about the horrors of war -- about rape, death and killing. Sonke Neitzel shared the material with renowned and bestselling psychologist Harald Wezler and they set about trying to make sense of the vast piles of documents, the hours of transcripts. The result is SOLDATEN, a landmark book which will change the way we look at soldiers and war, and is as relevant to our modern conflicts The Rose download book in Iraq and Afghanistan as it was to the soldiers of the German Army in 1945.

David Austin: The Rose

The Rose

Description

David Austin has an international following as a rose grower with an intimate knowledge of his chosen flower. In this wide-ranging book, he examines the historical development of the rose and discusses its place in the garden scene. He then selects and describes the best and most beautiful roses for today's gardens in chapters on Old Roses, Hybrid Teas and Floribundas, Small Roses, Species Roses, Shrub Roses, Climbing Roses and Rambling Roses. The English Roses that he has developed over fifty years of painstaking hybridisation are discussed in an especially highly illustrated chapter that includes the best roses bred by him up to the present day. The English Roses, which combine the charm, form of flower and gorgeous fragrance of the Old Roses with the disease resistance and the free and continuous flowering of Modern Roses, have influenced the way roses are used in gardens worldwide. Chapters on roses in the garden scene and on cultivation complete the book's comprehensive coverage. The opinions and recommendations of a leading rose grower, plantsman and gardener are combined with sumptuous photographs of roses in gardens and close up to make The Rose irresistible for rose lovers and a must-have book for every rosarian. In this, the new edition of this authoritative book, the chapter on English Roses has been expanded to include details and colour photographs of 18 additional roses which have been bred in recent years. Among these new plants are the William and Catherine, a musk rose named to celebrate the Royal Wedding in April 2011; the Fighting Temeraire, a Leander rose with rich apricot petals, named for the Turner Contemporary Gallery in Kent; and the Princess Anne, 'Best New Plant Variety' at the Grower of the Year Awards 2011, and named after Her Royal Highness, the Princess Royal.
